National DNA Day is a unique day when students, teachers and the public can learn more about genetics and genomics! It was created to commemorate the completion of the Human Genome Project in April 2003, and the discovery of DNA's double helix in April 1953. Visit www.genome.gov to learn more!

For MAGC Members:

DNA Day is recognized annually on April 25th.  MAGC has taken great initiative this year to celebrate DNA Day by sharing our expertise with others.  The Education Committee is excited to announce a partnership with the MAGC, MDCH and the NHGRI to provide high school presentations on Careers in Human Genetics for DNA Day 2008.  A number of MAGC members have volunteered to provide presentations across the state, and students from the NHGRI will assist in education at remote Michigan locations.  Volunteers are still needed on or around April 25th.  If interested, please contact Trudy McKanna for more information at trudy.mckanna@spectrum-health.org

Welcome to MAGC

What is a genetic counselor?

Genetic Counselors bring unique knowledge and skills to health care as they provide information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.   Genetic Counselors generally work as members of a health care team in collaborative relationships with clinical geneticists, and other physicians, as well as other allied healthcare professionals.

What is the MAGC?

Michigan genetic counselors had met as an informal group for over fifteen years.  In 2006, the Michigan Association of Genetic Counselors, Inc. was formally incorporated.  In 2008, the MAGC became a state chapter of the National Society of Genetic Counselors.  With these two important changes, the MAGC is positioned to serve as the recognized, leading advocate of quality genetic counseling services in Michigan.

The Mission and Vision of the Michigan Association of Genetic Counselors:

Mission
The mission of MAGC is to champion quality genetic counseling services in the State of Michigan by promoting genetics education, fostering
professional development, encouraging communication and alliances, and facilitating access to services.

Vision
The Vision of MAGC is to be the leading advocate for quality genetic counseling services in the State of Michigan.
